These are examination follow up photos taken from February 2017 to October 2017. Priya is 42 and was suffering from Severe Telogen Effluvium and Severe Alopecia areata. She started treatment with us in late November 2016 and the first photo is the early signs of recovery in February 2017. The whole process of staging a full recovery took about a year. Priya was not the model patient and only managed check ups on a 2 monthly basis, but she never missed a treatment at home. We advised her to use out Vitastim amd Biostim treatments on a daily basis in conjunction with a Follicle Builder treatment every second day. You can see the results. We are pleased to report that her hair is now completely back to normal and she does not require any further treatments.

For you information:

Severe Alopecia Areata is an extremely common condition and will affect 1% to 2% of the population at some point in their lives. Most sufferers are children and young adults (below 40 years old), although it can affect people of all ages. The hair loss is sudden and manifests itself in small, smooth-skinned patches that are likely to gradually widen with time. It can also affect the sufferer’s nails, giving them a pitted, ridged or brittle appearance. The exact cause is still unknown, although current theories include an auto-immune disease, stress or suggest a genetic basis.

Severe Telogen Effluvium occurs when the growing phase of the hair is interrupted prematurely causing the hair follicles to enter the telogen (resting) phase of the hair cycle earlier than normal. Two to four months later, following the normal cyclic pattern, diffuse shedding of the hair begins. When this happens there are not enough hairs left in the anagen phase, or growing phase, and the result is therefore diffuse thinning of the hair. Telogen effluvium can be triggered by anaemia.

Androgenetic alopecia (female pattern baldness) in women is often linked to hormonal changes with the hair loss following events such as the menopause, childbirth or as a result of stopping or starting oral contraceptive pills. The hair loss is generally more uniform over the scalp than in the male counterpart, but also results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone. The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be over sensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

19.09.2018 in MALE HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED

Androgenetic alopecia has a characteristic pattern of hair loss; it begins with a slight recession at the front hairline and is followed by thinning on the crown of the head. The hair above the ears and at the nape of the neck is unaffected. The hair loss results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone. The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be over sensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that plays a role in hair loss. A vitamin D deficiency can cause hair loss.

17.09.2018 in HAIR LOSS HEALTH NEWS

In looking at how vitamin D and hair growth are connected.  Does a deficiency cause hair loss, and is it reversible.

Does vitamin D deficiency cause hair loss?

A vitamin D deficiency can lead to hair loss.

Vitamin D stimulates hair follicles, so a deficiency can lead to hair loss.

There is evidence that having a vitamin D deficiency does cause hair loss and other hair problems.

Vitamin D stimulates hair follicles to grow, and so when the body does not have enough vitamin D, the hair is affected.

A vitamin D deficiency can also be linked to alopecia areata, an autoimmune condition that causes patchy hair loss.

We have found that people with alopecia areata have much lower levels of vitamin D than people who do not have alopecia.

Vitamin D deficiency can also play a role in hair loss in people without alopecia. Other research shows that women who have other forms of hair loss also had lower levels of vitamin D.

How does vitamin D affect hair?

Vitamin D affects the health of many parts of the body, including the hair.

Vitamin D plays a role in the creation of new hair follicles. New follicles will help hair maintain thickness and prevent existing hair from falling out prematurely.

Because of this link, getting adequate amounts of vitamin D can support hair growth and regrowth.

Other vitamin D deficiency symptoms.

People with a vitamin D deficiency may have no symptoms, or their symptoms may be nonspecific and change over time.

Symptoms of a vitamin D deficiency include:

changes in mood

depression

anxiety

frequent fractures

slow healing

loss of bone density

muscle weakness

high blood pressure

constant fatigue

chronic pain

infertility

decreased endurance

A lack of sunlight or not eating enough foods rich in vitamin D are the most common causes of a vitamin D deficiency.

If you are concerned about vitamin D deficiency-related hair loss should consult a trichologist who will likely suggest supplements, dietary changes, and spending more time outdoors to help combat the deficiency.
