TIPS FOR HEALTHY HAIR

14.09.2023 in HAIR LOSS PRODUCTS AND TREATMENTS

How you wash your hair and the products you use can go a long way in maintaining smooth, shiny hair. Follow these simple tips from our Trichologist to maintain healthy hair.

How you wash your hair and the products you use can go a long way toward maintaining smooth, shiny hair. Follow these simple tips from our Trichologist to maintain healthy hair.

  1. Wash oily hair more frequently. How often you wash your hair should be based on how much oil your scalp produces.
    • If your scalp is oily, you may need to wash it as often as once a day.
    • If you have chemically treated hair, your hair may be drier, so you may want to wash it less frequently.
    • As you get older, your scalp makes less oil, so you may not need to shampoo as often. But if you see flakes in your hair, you may not be shampooing enough. This can lead to dandruff and other scalp diseases.
  2. Concentrate shampoo on the scalp. When washing your hair, concentrate on cleaning primarily the scalp, rather than washing the entire length of hair. Washing only your hair can create flyaway hair that is dull and coarse.
  3. Use conditioner after every shampoo unless you use a “2-in-1” shampoo, which cleans and conditions hair. Using a conditioner can significantly improve the look of damaged or weathered hair by increasing shine, decreasing static electricity, improving strength and offering some protection from harmful UV rays.
  4. Concentrate conditioner on the tips of the hair. Because conditioners can make fine hair look limp, they only should be used on the tips of the hair and not on the scalp or length of the hair.
  5. Choose a shampoo and conditioner formulated specifically for your hair type. For example, if you color your hair, use a shampoo designed for color-treated hair. If your hair is damaged or chemically treated, consider a “2-in-1” shampoo. Regardless of cost, many shampoo and conditioner brands provide the same benefits.
  6. Protect hair when swimming. Protect your hair from the damaging effects of chlorine by wetting and conditioning your hair before swimming. Wear a tight-fitting swim cap and use a specially formulated swimmers shampoo and deep conditioner after swimming to replace lost moisture.

If you have questions about caring for your hair, you should make an appointment to see our Trichologist.

Now you can keep the hair you have

21.02.2011 in HAIR LOSS PRODUCTS AND TREATMENTS

We offer hair loss treatments without a trip to the Doctors.

Act early: seek help before hair loss becomes significant

Male-pattern baldness affects 6.5 million men in the UK and by the age of 50, half of all men have experienced hair loss. Reactions differ but for some it can dent self-confidence or even trigger depression. If you’re unhappy with your hair loss, it pays to act sooner rather than later. It’s easier to maintain existing hair than to regrow it: if a hair follicle stops working, it usually cannot be revived.

Male-pattern baldness is the reason for hair loss in 95 per cent of men. It’s caused by oversensitive follicles reacting to a testosterone by-product, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), by shrinking and stopping working. It usually starts with a receding hairline, the hair of the crown and temples thins next, eventually leaving a horseshoe shape of hair around the back and sides of the head. In some cases, all the hair goes.

There are treatments that treat male-pattern baldness, and you can find out more about them as part of a face-to-face consultation at The Hair Centre. There’s also an online service that gives you direct access to these treatments without the need for a GP visit. Used daily, this reduces the level of DHT in the scalp.

You begin by filling in a questionnaire which will assess your suitability for treatment just email us at info@thewestminsterpractice.com for a questionaire.

In studies, nine out of 10 men kept their hair while using this treatment, and two out of three men who stayed on the programme longer experienced hair regrowth.

Propecia Hair Loss Medication Could Cause Erection Difficulties

17.01.2011 in HAIR LOSS PRODUCTS AND TREATMENTS

TOLEDO, OHIO, Jan. 17, 2011 /NewsRelease/ – There are several reported unwanted effects of Propecia (the hair loss prevention drug), which (based on Merck’s website) include the following: allergy symptoms including rash, itching, hives, and swelling from the lips and face; issues with ejaculation; breast tenderness and enlargement; and testicular pain. Finasteride was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1997 as a prescription-only treatment for hair loss (MPB). This drug is manufactured through the NJ-based pharmaceutical provider Merck, and marketed worldwide under the trade name Propecia. Clinical trials have proved that Propecia is very efficient at stopping hair loss associated with male pattern baldness. In studies, 9 out of 10 men who took Propecia noticed hair thinning stop, plus some of them even reported regrowth of hair. (source: propecia.com)

Merck have recently, and after receiving several complaints from consumers, updated the drug’s label and added new warnings that Propecia may cause sexual unwanted effects. The noted sex-related unwanted effects contain decreased libido (sex drive), decrease in the quantity of semen, and erectile dysfunction. Merck also say that these side effects will go away after stopping the treatment, but do they really?
A recent news article published on BBC’s web site tells the story of James, a 26-year-old man from Edinburgh – UK, who began taking Propecia after noticing that his hair was continuously falling.
“I went online and researched it. I found out there was a drug called Propecia, and soon enough I started buying that and it worked a goody.” – James told BBC reporter Simon Mundie.
Before long of using Propecia James started experiencing less interest in sex. So, he stopped taking the drug thinking those side effects will diminish, but “things soon got worse” – he said.
“After about three weeks all hell broke loose. I more or less became totally impotent.”
So, James visited see a physician a couple of months later, who put him on testosterone therapy. On the other hand, that didn’t work for him and that he was left with only one choice: a penile implant.
There are doctors within the U.S. who declare that circumstances like James’s are common, and warn users that Propecia might have long-term sexual side effects.
Propecia just isn’t the only medication that could cause erection difficulties. There are lots of other FDA-approved treatments that may lead to erection dysfunction as a side-effect. These contain, but aren’t limited to, antidepressants (like Valium, Prozac, Ativan, yet others), antihistamine medications (like Tagamet, Zantac, yet others), high blood pressure drugs (like Inderal, Aldactone, and others), Parkinson’s disease medications, chemotherapy and hormonal medications, along with other medications. The ED and men’s health dedicated web-site BuyViagraPillsOnline.com follows all news and events that have to do with erectile dysfunction, and will maintain its users updated concerning the safety of Propecia and other drugs that could have sexual side effects.

VITASTIM

vitastim

Considerable empirical evidence has supported the oestrogen like activity of hop extract and recent scientific research has confirmed that hop extract shows a potent acceleration on hair growth in cases of androgenic alopecia.

BIOSTIM

biostim

Clinical trials of the natural ingredients have established anti-androgen activity and the ability to suppress di-hydroxy testosterone (DHT) formation, beneficial in cases of androgenic alopecia.  The increased dermal papilla activity increases hair cell production and proliferation, increases the number of hairs in the anagen phase and increases the A/T (anagen/telogen ration).

Vitastim and Biostim used together are proven treatments for both male and female-pattern baldness.

Most users see improvements, including a halt to the balding or slowing down of it, as well as thicker hair.

In order to treat hair loss effectively we would recommend that you have a diagnosis made as soon as possible by one of our experienced Westminster Trichologists. Stress can be an aggravator in almost all cases of hair loss and an accurate diagnosis will always, at the very least, take some of the stress away from you.

Gary Heron says: You’ll have access to the most effective treatments available through The Hair Centre and at a fraction of the cost of going to other Private Commercial Clinics and Centres.

When it’s time to see the Trichologist: If you begin losing hair rapidly, and or are cosmetically concerned about baldness, consult your Trichologist about treatment options.

You can receive a free hair loss consultation with a Westminster Trichologist at our Hair Centre.

The point is that you are not getting to the real problem and you should seek specific professional advice from a Westminster Trichologist.
