Alopecia treated

August 2008October 2009 (9)

We quite often get enquiries from women who are suffering from hair loss but there is not much that we can do for them as in some cases, the sort of hair loss that they are suffering from is something called alopecia areata.

Fortunately, most cases are very treatable with modern trichological treatments today.  The appearance of this type of hair loss is when large areas of the scalp shed hair and form bald patches – (as shown above) where a young woman has been treated successfully at The Hair Centre over a 12 month period. Early assessment is vital in all cases.

In extreme cases, people can lose all the hair from every part of their body.  It is not known exactly why this happens and it is heart-wrenching telling patients that there is not much that we can do for them.

It is thought that alopecia areata is caused by an autoimmune disease so it is often treated within the NHS with steroids to suppress the immune system. The problem with this is that the hair loss usually resumes as soon as the patient comes off the steroid treatment so it is not very satisfactory. Our treatment system delivers lasting results.

Some people will grow their hair back and others will suffer sporadically thoughout their lives.

VITASTIM

Description

Herbal based aqueous lotion with multivitamin system, applied topically to stimulate dormant hair follicles and accelerate hair growth in the treatment of androgenic alopecia.

Mode of Action

Hop extract contains phyto-oestrogens, naturally occurring oestrogens that inhibit the activity of the enzyme 5-x reductase and reduce the proliferation of the potent metabolite di-hydroxy testosterone (DHT), which causes atrophy, and eventual loss of the hair follicle in genetically determined areas of the scalp.  These phyto-oestrogens can also recover dormant hair follicles suppressed by androgen activity.  The multivitamin system, particularly Vitamin H (Biotin) catalyse the process of conversion of amino acids into keratin hair cells and accelerates growth and diameter of the hair from the dermal papilla.

Clinical Trials

Considerable empirical evidence has supported the oestrogen like activity of hop extract and recent scientific research has confirmed that hop extract shows a potent acceleration on hair growth in cases of androgenic alopecia.

BIOSTIM

Description

A combination of naturally occurring 5-reductase inhibitors with added multivitamin complex for the stimulation of hair follicles suppressed by the action of Androgens in cases of androgenic alopecia.

Mode of Action

5-reductase inhibitors act as anti-androgens, reducing the levels of di-hydroxy testosterone (DHT), decreasing the levels of androgen activity at the target site.  The consequent reduced levels of DHT stabilise or reduce the level of atrophy of the hair follicle and shaft in the genetically determined areas in the treatment of androgenic alopecia.  The hair growth period (anagen) is prolonged and promotes increased hair growth and density.

Clinical Trials

Clinical trials of the natural ingredients have established anti-androgen activity and the ability to suppress di-hydroxy testosterone (DHT) formation, beneficial in cases of androgenic alopecia.  The increased dermal papilla activity increases hair cell production and proliferation, increases the number of hairs in the anagen phase and increases the A/T (anagen/telogen ration).

Do you have Alopecia? I did and I recovered.

Alopecia Areata is an extremely common condition and will affect 1% to 2% of the population at some point in their lives.  Most sufferers are children and young adults (below 40 years old), though it can affect people of all ages.  The hair loss is sudden and manifests itself in small, smooth-skinned patches that are likely to gradually widen with time.  It can also affect the sufferer’s nails, giving them a pitted, ridged or brittle appearance.  The exact cause is still unknown, although current theories include an auto-immune disease, stress or suggest a genetic basis.
