Male Hair Loss – Tom's Story.

12.01.2009 in HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED, MALE HAIR LOSS, TRICHOLOGIST

photo331.jpgI started treatment in October 2005 after the fact that I was losing my hair was brought to my attention by someone that would probably have loved to have  seen me go bald. It seems that the people that do care about you probably have noticed that you’re losing your hair, but are afraid to bring up the subject. After realising that indeed I was receding, I began researching as to how, or if I could rectify the problem. I was pretty clueless in terms of treatment procedures but was hoping that the Elton John option was a thing of the past! I had a few consultations before attending the Westminster Practice. The previous clinics had all told me that there was a strong chance that I would recover and get a full head of hair again. At the Westminster practice I was told that if I did treatment right, I would have my hair back again. Easy choice in the end.

photo575.jpgSo I started a course of treatment for 12 months combining a morning and evening massaging of treatments into the hair plus specialist shampoo and conditioner. I began using the treatments, kept to the routines as set out by Gary and hoped that soon when the wind blew I wouldn’t be feeling that bald patch that I had previously ignored! After a while there was a definite sign of improvement and I could see that the treatments were having an effect. I went for monthly check ups to monitor the progress and it was good to see the difference from month to month. I kept up the treatment for the 12 months and then decided to extend the course for another 6 months to guarantee that I would get all my hair back. During the treatment Gary asked to bring pictures in of myself to see when the receding had started. He identified that I had been losing my hair since the age of seventeen. That dispelled the myth that baldness only happened to the over 30’s!

photo-0009.jpgAfter the initial 12 month period had passed I had definitely seen a vast improvement in the condition of my hair. The hairline was no longer receding, it was regaining a lot of its thickness and the colour had changed. Unfortunately, I then took it upon myself to think that I had crossed the line and that I didn’t need to continue the treatment so vigorously. From using it day and night I began to only use it once or twice a week. I continued my monthly check ups and there were no visible differences at first, but when I went for a check up in January 2007 the signs of my negligence were apparent. The hair had stopped growing again and it was getting worse. I had come to a point where I thought that I didn’t need to use the treatment as I had been doing before. However, my laziness had caught up with me and I now realised that to fully recover I needed to go back to the routine of day and night treatment and not take my recovery for granted.

Thankfully after realising the error of my ways, I now can see a vast improvement again and am closer to the finishing line once more. I have a couple of months left and then I can go onto stabilizers. No magic potions, no quick solutions, just tried and trusted treatment. It works-providing you work at the treatment.

HERE I AM 4 YEARS LATER STILL WITH A FULL HEAD OF HAIR, THANKS GARY.

MALE HAIR LOSS RESULTS

I think I have Male Pattern Hair Loss. What shall I do?

BEFORE

AFTER

We prescribed the following treatments:

Minoxidil 5%+ Hair Growth Stimulant: Minoxidil is a vasodilator and dilates the blood capillaries responsible for blood supply to the hair follicles, thus allowing more blood to reach the hair follicles and encourage hair growth.

Biostim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser:
This stimulant contains a very effective natural 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It reduces the amount of 5-alpha reductase in the scalp and thereby reduces the formation of DHT, stabilising hair loss and encouraging a healthy growth cycle.

Is Hair Loss Making You Sick….

02.12.2008 in MALE HAIR LOSS

A lot of people, (normally those who don’t suffer from hair loss), say that Male Pattern Baldness should not be classified as an illness as such because in fact it is all part of the normal aging process.

When your hair starts to fall out due to Male Pattern Baldness it is not a sign of unhealthy living or any medical problems at all. Some of the healthiest men are completely bald and it is also worth noting that Male Pattern Baldness is not actually a sign of aging but a purely genetic process which occurs because of a build up of the compound Dihydrotestosterone in the scalp. This can even occur in men as young as eighteen who are definitely not suffering from old age.

On this basis therefore why is it that hair loss should be considered to be an illness? Well quite simply the stress and anxiety that hair loss causes some men is so intense that it causes them to become very depressed and unable to function normally as they did previously with a full head of hair. The stress is normally more severe in younger men who stand out of the crowd due to their Male Pattern Baldness. With older men whose contemporaries are all bald too the problem of male pattern baldness is normally laughed at jokingly and not really a big worry.

Men have been known to change character completely when they start to go bald. Previously they would’ve been out going and confident but their baldness has made them nervous and shy and wary of meeting new people and social situations. The hair loss drug Propecia for example has been hailed by many men as life changing because it has allowed them to be their former confident selves.

If hair loss is something that really does concern you and you feel that it is affecting the way you deal with people and how you feel about yourself maybe you should get professional medical help.

MALE HAIR LOSS RESULTS AFTER 6 MONTHS

MAY 2008 (BEFORE TREATMENT) NOVEMBER 2008 (NOW)

We prescribed the following treatments:

Vitastim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser:
This stimulant is recommended to help stabilise hair loss and strengthen existing hair.  It is a natural hop-based solution that works as a vasodilator to increase blood circulation in the scalp and so enable healthy hair growth.  It also contains a multi-vitamin complex to help catalyse the process of conversion of amino acids into keratin hair cells and accelerate growth and diameter of the hair from the dermal papilla.

Biostim 15% Hair Regrowth Stimulant and Hair Loss Stabiliser
This stimulant contains a very effective natural 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It reduces the amount of 5-alpha reductase in the scalp and thereby reduces the formation of DHT, stabilising hair loss and encouraging a healthy growth cycle.

Male Pattern Hair Loss And How To Combat It

21.11.2008 in HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED, MALE HAIR LOSS

Male Pattern Hair Loss (Androgenetic Alopecia as it is scientifically known), is the most common form of hair loss amongst men representing almost 95% of all cases in the UK. This condition of male hair loss, usually starts between the ages of 20 to 45 years of age with the development of a receding hairline and a thinning on the crown area. This condition affects 1 in 2 men at some point throughout their lives.
The entire process of genetic hair loss can take anywhere up to 25 years and is characterised by the typical ‘M’ shape to which the hairline eventually recedes. However in some patients this process can happen over a much shorter period of time with complete baldness within 5 years and at a very early age (late teens).

What causes Male Pattern Hair Loss?
It is universally believed throughout the scientific community that male pattern hair loss is caused by the two main factors of genetics and the body’s production of, as well as sensitivity to, the sex hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
DHT, or Dihydrotestosterone, is produced from the breakdown of testosterone by an enzyme in the body. This sex hormone, which is found on the scalp, gets into the hair follicles and shrinks them preventing visible hair from growing. As well as this, DHT also thickens the scalp reducing blood flow to the capillaries which also works to inhibit future hair growth.

Who does Male Pattern Hair Loss affect?
Male pattern baldness affects virtually all men by the time they have reached their 50’s, although the age at which this hair loss starts is considerably variable. Around half of all 50 year old men and 3 out of 10, 30 year old men suffer from this condition to some degree.

How common is Male Pattern Hair Loss?
Approximately 70% of all men will be affected by Male Pattern Hair Loss at some point throughout their lives. This is approximately 7 million men losing their hair at any one given time. Male Pattern Hair Loss affects different sections of the population at different rates, thought mainly to be due to the genetic nature of this condition. As many as half of all Caucasian males will experience hair loss at some point throughout their lives, where as in contrast Japanese and Chinese men have amongst the lowest rates for developing this complaint.
