Hair loss myth buster

03.03.2010 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

man-upsidedown

Before you try it, getting a cow to lick your scalp or standing upside down, neither will help your hair to grow back.

For every treatment that works there are a dozen that don’t. But some age-old myths are still in circulation. We sort fact from fiction in 20 of the most common hair loss myths.

Hair loss comes from the mother’s side
Baldness is hereditary, but it’s not limited to the maternal side of the family. The hair loss gene can come from either parent.

Frequent ejaculation causes baldness
There’s no proven link between frequent ejaculation and hair loss. There’s also no truth to the myth that the more sex you have the less hair you’ll lose.

Washing your head in cold water cures baldness
Washing your head every morning in cold water may boost blood circulation but it does nothing for baldness.

Losing hair every day means you’re balding
If you’ve got male-pattern baldness then, yes, you’ll lose hair every day. That said, it’s normal to lose as many as 100 hairs a day. These will usually grow back.

It’s unusual to lose hair from our early 30s
As you get older, the number of hair follicles on your scalp will progressively go down. With ageing, hair becomes finer and more sparse.

Hair products can cause hair loss
Hair care products don’t cause hair loss. You can mix as much gel, mousse or spray in to your hair as you like.

Standing on your head cures hair loss
Standing on your head to increase blood flow won’t regenerate your scalp. Blood circulation has no influence on hair loss.

Constantly wearing hats causes baldness
Unless your hat is so tight that it puts excessive tension on the hair, it doesn’t matter if you wear a cap 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Hats do not lead to hair loss.

Brushing or massaging the scalp can reduce hair loss
Blood circulation doesn’t boost hair growth. However, too much brushing may cause injury, leading to loss of hair.

Hairstyles don’t cause hair loss
Styles that put too much tension on hair, such as tight plaits, ponytails, corn-rows or winding too tightly on to rollers (especially heated rollers), can cause some hair loss.

Cutting your hair will make it grow back thicker
Hair feels thicker after a hair cut because hair is thicker at the base. Cutting your hair will not help to prevent male or female-pattern baldness.

Blow drying doesn’t cause hair loss
Blow drying can damage, burn or dry the hair, which can cause it to fall out. But this hair will grow back immediately. It is not considered to be permanent hair loss.

Wigs and toupees make hair loss worse
Hair doesn’t need to breathe. Only the roots are alive, and they get their oxygen from the blood in the scalp. Wigs and hairpieces only damage hair if they are too tight.

Excessive washing of hair causes hair loss
Shampoo only removes hair that has already fallen out.

Long exposure to the sun leads to hair loss
Hair loss occurs at the follicle level. Fortunately, your hair acts as a shield against the sun to protect the roots.

Hair dyes cause balding
Most hair-colouring treatments contain chemicals that, if not properly used, are harmful to hair. However, such dyes don’t cause hair loss.

Diet can cause hair loss
A balanced diet is essential for your general health. However, there’s no evidence that certain types of food boost hair growth or cause hair loss.

Stress causes hair loss
Stressful episodes, such as an accident or surgery, can cause hair production to shut down temporarily. Stress doesn’t cause male-pattern baldness.

Hormone problems cause hair loss
Problems with your thyroid gland can cause hair loss. Women may have short-term hair loss shortly after pregnancy.

Steroids have no side effects on hair
Steroid use can cause hair loss. Research has proven that anabolic steroids increase the levels of male hormones that induce baldness.

Husbands 'clueless' on basic facts about their wives, poll finds such as real hair colour

10.02.2010 in HAIR LOSS FACTS

Millions of men are clueless about what size clothes their wives wear, her favourite perfume and even what her natural hair colour is, a poll has found.

Researchers revealed while 6 out of 10 husbands believe they know their spouse inside out, the truth is they are in the dark about almost everything.

One in ten have no idea what their wife’s date of birth is, eight per cent don’t know their natural hair colour and 12 per cent don’t know their eye colour or natural hair colour.

One in three have absolutely no idea what her favourite perfume is.

The statistics emerged in a study of 2,000 men for The Perfume Shop. Spokeswoman Michelle D’vaz said: ”The results of this survey are actually quite shocking.

”The basic details like date of birth and natural hair colour are what you expect your partner to know about you, but it seems many men don’t.

And 80 per cent believe that if the tables were turned, women would know everything from eye colour, natural hair colour to the name of the aftershave their man wears.

It's OK to Be Fat, Just Not Bald

Hair Loss Cure

Now a US survey conducted on behalf of Rogaine (which probably sounds familiar because of The Hangover) has revealed that 40 percent of Americans would rather their spouse be overweight than balding. Perhaps even more concerning is that, of the 1,001 Americans surveyed, 75 percent incorrectly cited stress as the main cause of hair loss, with 35 percent believing that wearing a hat thins hair. In fact, “hereditary hair loss accounts for 95 percent of all hair loss,” according to Dr. Robert Leonard who sits on the board for the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery. Do you agree, is it preferably for your partner to be overweight than balding?

Britain's pretty boys turning to their partners' make-up bags

21.01.2010 in HAIR LOSS FACTS, TRICHOLOGIST

Daily Mail online

One in ten British males has confessed to using their partner’s make-up while nearly a third have borrowed women’s nail products and hair styling gadgets, according to a new survey.

Fed up with unsightly hairs, blemishes and rough skin, image-conscious men have admitted secretly dipping into the make-up bag owned by the women in their lives.

Concealer and foundation – long the ultimate beauty essentials for women – are becoming increasingly popular, with one tenth of men admitting to using them.

Russell Brand and Alex Reid are famous for wearing make up, but not all British men are as open about their use of beauty products

Tweezers were the top beauty steal – used by 39 per cent of men – while 37 per cent confessed to using their other half’s moisturiser.

One third of men admitted to using at least three beauty products or gadgets, while nail files, hair styling products and lip gloss were used by more than 20 per cent of the 2000 men surveyed.

Face masks, scrubs, razors, and hair removal cream were also in the top ten beauty products favoured by men.

Nail files and moisturiser are among the products favoured by British males

Hair straighteners, fake tan, nail polish and mascara were also popular.

Despite the rising popularity of make up amongst men – seen in the likes of celebrities including Russell Brand and Alex Reid – it seems the average British male prefers to keep his beauty regime a secret.

More than a third of those surveyed said they had not revealed their habits to their partner – despite the same number of women claiming to have caught their other halves using their products.

Men from London were found to be the most secretive, with almost 60 per cent choosing to hide their regime from their partners.

Can certain hair styles or treatments cause hair loss?

Yes. If you wear pigtails or cornrows or use tight hair rollers, the pull on your hair can cause a type of hair loss called traction alopecia . If the pulling is stopped before scarring of the scalp develops, your hair will grow back normally. However, scarring can cause permanent hair loss. Hot oil hair treatments or chemicals used in permanents (also called “perms”) may cause inflammation (swelling) of the hair follicle, which can result in scarring and hair loss.
