“I am a 34 year old female with hair loss. I have been suffering from thinning hair for about 4 years. I have used Minoxidil for 2 years, I read about lots of different alternative treatments, but are there any other alternatives that really work? I hate the idea of putting this on my scalp for the rest of my life. I hate this product and do not want to be dependant on a prescription drug. Is there any real alternative?”

You may be thinking that at the age of 34 it is very unusual to have thinning hair. Unfortunately, this is not the case. There are as many women with hair thinning problems as men, but women very rarely go bald like men. It may surprise you to know, too, that hair loss in very young women is rampant and on the increase. By very young, I mean late teens and early twenties. However, this does not answer your question.

There is always a reason for hair thinning and the most important way to counteract it is to correctly diagnose the cause or as in most cases the causes of the thinning. The causes vary enormously from low iron levels, insufficient proteins in your diet, hormonal effects or thyroid anomalies, menopause, PCOS  just to mention a few.

Once the causes has been established, the action you should take will be quite straightforward. In your case, you are on Minoxidil, which sometimes stablises the thinning, but not always. The point is that you are not getting to the real problem and you should seek specific professional advice from a Westminster Trichologist.

Causes of Female Hair Loss
Most common hair loss in women occurs in a diffuse pattern. Often it is hereditary, which is called female pattern alopecia. Diffuse hair loss in women can also be caused by underlying medical conditions and medications that can cause “telogen effluvium,”(a condition where hair is shifted into a resting stage and then several months later shed).

Female hair loss can be due to anything that involves a change in the estrogen hormone balance in a female’s system. It may result from discontinuation of birth control pills or any other hormonal type of birth control method, miscarriage or still birth, abortion, hormonal imbalance, or menopause.

FEMALE HAIR LOSS REVERSED

Androgenetic alopecia (female pattern baldness) in women is often linked to hormonal changes with the hair loss following events such as the menopause, childbirth or as a result of stopping or starting oral contraceptive pills. The hair loss is generally more uniform over the scalp than in the male counterpart, but also results from a complex chemical reaction when the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase converts the testosterone in the system into DHT or dihydrotestosterone. The hair follicles are genetically predisposed to be over sensitive to the DHT and become smaller and smaller with time, leading to the eventual hair loss.

Female Hair Loss: "Are all the treatments for men?" BUT IF YOU ARE A WOMAN WHAT DO YOU DO?

27.04.2009 in FEMALE HAIR LOSS, HAIR LOSS [ PHOTOS ] TREATED

In today’s increasingly stressful world, the number of women suffering from hair loss is increasing. We all want to look our best and damage to a woman’s “crowning glory” can be a uniquely upsetting affliction.

Hair loss in woman can generally be seen evenly across the scalp, without definite bald patches. If this is happening to you, the following conditions may be affecting you:

Diffuse hair loss is a gradual thinning of the hair as opposed to a straightforward bald patch and is the most common type of hair loss in women. The replacement of old hairs by new hairs is slowed down so that the hair becomes sparse and the scalp can be seen clearly through the hair. The causes can be numerous and include stress, restriction of the blood supply, a poor nervous system and hormonal influences.
